Guided Maine Black Duck hunts
According to Ducks Unlimited The highest breeding densities of the American Black Duck are found in Maine and Nova Scotia. American black ducks utilize a variety of habitats for breeding, such as coastal saltwater marshes, acid bogs, lakes, stream margins, fresh, and brackish marshes. Every Late November through the month of December when the inland waters freeze the Maine Black Ducks will flock up by the hundreds on Maine’s beautiful and rugged coastal bays and saltwater marshes joining the already large resident population of Maine saltwater Black Ducks along Maine’s coast to put the feed bags on!
Mallards tend to stay away from the saltwater lending itself to more pure bread American Black Ducks then inland freshwater habitat that can have a higher population of Mallard/Black Duck hybrids.
Is it the saltwater itself, the saltwater invertebrates that the Maine Black Ducks are eating, the lack of Mallards, the frigid North Atlantic saltwater, or maybe all of the above that makes these Maine Saltwater Black Ducks seem just a bit bigger and blacker than average? Whatever it is, it seems to work, and these Maine Black Ducks have just a simple beauty that can’t be beat!
If you have never had the opportunity to hunt Black Ducks and or you have never hunted saltwater or tidal Black Ducks before then you are in for a treat on one of our guided Maine black duck hunts!
